CLINICAL SERVICES

Diagnosis, monitoring
& ongoing care

Our clinical team delivers evidence-based care using the most advanced diagnostic equipment available in Nigeria.

Comprehensive Eye Examination

The foundation of all eye care — recommended annually for adults, every 6 months for children

A comprehensive eye exam at The Eye Doctors goes well beyond a basic vision check. Our optometrists and ophthalmologists assess your complete eye health — from visual acuity and refractive error to intraocular pressure, retinal health and early signs of systemic disease.

Many serious conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy show no early symptoms. A thorough annual examination is the single most effective way to catch these conditions before they cause irreversible damage.

What's included

  • Visual acuity & refractive error assessment
  • Intraocular pressure measurement
  • Anterior segment examination (slit lamp)
  • Dilated fundus (retinal) examination
  • Colour vision & contrast sensitivity
  • Prescription update if required

Paediatric Eye Care

Specialist vision care for children from infancy through adolescence

Children's eyes develop rapidly in the first decade of life, and undetected vision problems can have lasting effects on learning, development and quality of life. Our paediatric specialists are trained to examine and treat even very young patients with patience and precision.

We screen for amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (squint), refractive errors and congenital eye conditions — and work closely with parents to ensure early intervention where it matters most.

What's included

  • Age-appropriate visual acuity testing
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye) screening & treatment
  • Strabismus (squint) assessment
  • Refraction under cycloplegia if required
  • Myopia management counselling
  • Prescription glasses & patching plans

Glaucoma Management

Early detection and long-term care for Nigeria's leading cause of irreversible blindness

Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight" — most patients have no symptoms until significant and irreversible damage has already occurred. At The Eye Doctors, we use advanced tonometry, optic disc imaging and visual field testing to detect glaucoma at the earliest possible stage.

For patients already diagnosed, we provide ongoing monitoring and treatment including topical medications and surgical referrals where required.

What's included

  • Intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry)
  • Optic disc & nerve fibre layer imaging
  • Visual field testing (perimetry)
  • Gonioscopy (drainage angle assessment)
  • Personalised treatment & monitoring plan

Diabetic Eye Screening

Protecting the vision of patients living with diabetes through regular retinal monitoring

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness. Diabetic retinopathy — damage to the blood vessels in the retina — affects a significant proportion of diabetic patients and progresses silently before symptoms appear.

We recommend annual retinal screening for all diabetic patients. Our high-resolution retinal imaging allows us to detect even the earliest changes, enabling prompt treatment and preventing vision loss.

What's included

  • Digital retinal photography
  • Dilated fundus examination
  • Macular assessment & OCT imaging
  • Diabetic retinopathy grading & report
  • Referral coordination with your physician

Dry Eyes Management

Relief and management for one of the most common and underdiagnosed eye conditions

Dry eye disease affects millions of people — often worsened by Lagos's climate, prolonged screen use, and air-conditioned environments. Symptoms range from mild irritation and grittiness to significant discomfort that affects daily life and work.

Our dry eye clinic offers a thorough assessment of tear film quality and meibomian gland function, followed by a personalised treatment plan that may include lubricants, warm compress therapy, dietary advice and in-clinic procedures.

What's included

  • Tear film quality & quantity assessment
  • Meibomian gland evaluation
  • Schirmer's test & TBUT measurement
  • Personalised dry eye management plan
  • Prescription lubricants & lifestyle advice

Cataract Management

Monitoring and early management for the world's leading cause of reversible blindness

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens that causes progressive blurring of vision. It develops slowly and is easily detected during a routine eye exam, well before it affects daily life.

We monitor cataract progression through regular eye exams and advise on the right time for surgery based on how much it affects your vision and lifestyle. For patients who've had cataract surgery, we also manage posterior capsule opacification; cloudy vision returning after surgery with YAG capsulotomy, a quick in-office laser procedure.

What's included

  • Lens clarity assessment
  • Visual acuity and glare testing
  • Cataract progression monitoring
  • Surgical referral when indicated
  • YAG capsulotomy for post-surgery follow-up care

Myopia Control Lenses: Progressive myopia is a condition where the degree of shortsightedness worsens year after year in shortsighted persons (myopes). High myopia, which results from progressive myopia, is now classified not just as a refractive error but as a disease by international health bodies. Progressive myopia occurs in about 32% of myopes who start using glasses as adolescents and in about 20% of myopes who start using glasses as youths or in young adulthood. At The Eye Doctors, we have myopia control lenses available as a prescription option, designed specifically to slow the progression of shortsightedness in myopes as they go on in life, sustaining fairly consistent habitual visual acuity levels.

What's included

  • Lens types: plus (converging), minus (diverging) & cylindrical lenses
  • Lens categories: single vision, bifocal (invisible, fused, D-top), progressive & therapeutic lenses
  • Lens properties: photochromic, blue-blockers, anti-reflective, tinted, polaroid, anti-scratch, smudge-free, water & dust repellent
  • Lens indices: standard, polycarbonate & ultrathin
  • Myopia control lenses
  • Precise dispensing measurements

Contact Lenses

Expert training and fitting for daily, monthly and extended wear contact lenses, including corneal and scleral lenses

At The Eye Doctors, contact lens fitting is more than just matching an equivalent spectacle prescription to a contact lens format. Our optometrists assess the general ocular health status of the patient, evaluating the curvature of the cornea, the integrity of the cornea and associated structures at the ocular surface, the lifestyle needs of the client and more, to effectively recommend the most suitable lens type and wear schedule.

With a deep delve into the ocular anatomy and refractive status of our patients through precision keratometry and advanced investigation and diagnostic modules, we obtain essential findings and parameters helpful for determining the best contact lens choices to ensure optimal fit, achieve comfort and meet our patients' visual needs.

With a clear understanding of the challenges contact lens users experience, our team of trained and skilled contact lens specialists ensure our patients are given optimal education, support and care along their contact lens journey until they become confident, independent and self-reliant in its use.

What's included

  • Lens function: prescription, cosmetic & therapeutic (bandage) lenses
  • Lens types: soft hydrogel/silicone & rigid gas permeable (RGP)
  • Duration: dailies, monthlies & extended wear
  • Lens size: corneal & scleral contact lenses
  • Precision keratometry & advanced diagnostics
  • Ongoing contact lens education & support
