Our surgical
procedures
All procedures are carried out by our consultant ophthalmologists using the most advanced surgical technology available in Nigeria.
Cataract Surgery
Phacoemulsification using the FDA-approved CataRhex 3 system by Oertli — Nigeria's most advanced cataract surgical technology
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, causing progressive blurring of vision. It is the world's leading cause of reversible blindness — and cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures in medicine when performed by an experienced team.
At The Eye Doctors, we perform phacoemulsification — the gold standard technique — using the CataRhex 3 system by Oertli, the most advanced cataract surgical platform in Nigeria. The procedure uses ultrasound energy to break up the cloudy lens, which is then removed and replaced with a clear intraocular lens (IOL). Most patients experience dramatically improved vision within 24 hours.
What to expect
- Pre-operative biometry & IOL calculation
- Phacoemulsification under local anaesthesia
- Premium intraocular lens (IOL) implantation
- Day-case procedure — home same day
- Post-operative drops & follow-up included
- Most patients see clearly within 24–48 hours
Manual Cataract Surgery (SICS)
Small Incision Cataract Surgery — a proven, cost-effective alternative to phacoemulsification for select cases
Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) is a well-established technique for removing cataracts through a small, self-sealing incision, without the use of ultrasound energy. It's particularly effective for harder, more advanced cataracts that may be less suited to phacoemulsification, and offers excellent visual outcomes at a lower cost.
At The Eye Doctors, our ophthalmologists are experienced in both phacoemulsification and manual SICS, and will recommend the technique best suited to your specific cataract and eye condition. Like phacoemulsification, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear intraocular lens (IOL).
What to expect
- Pre-operative biometry & IOL calculation
- Small incision surgery under local anaesthesia
- Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation
- Day-case procedure — home same day
- Post-operative drops & follow-up included
Glaucoma Surgery
Trabeculectomy — the gold standard filtration surgery for glaucoma that cannot be adequately controlled with drops or laser
When glaucoma cannot be adequately controlled with eye drops alone, surgery becomes necessary to lower intraocular pressure and protect the optic nerve from further damage.
The gold standard operation is trabeculectomy — a filtration procedure that creates a new drainage pathway for aqueous fluid. This is frequently performed with antifibrotic augmentation using Mitomycin C, which reduces scarring and significantly lowers the risk of the drainage channel failing.
Surgical options
- Trabeculectomy — gold standard filtration surgery
- Augmentation with Mitomycin C — reduces scarring & filtration failure
- Surgical iridectomy — iris procedure for angle-closure glaucoma
Pterygium Removal
Surgical excision with conjunctival autografting to minimise recurrence — particularly common in Lagos's UV-intense climate
A pterygium is a fleshy, wedge-shaped growth of conjunctival tissue that extends onto the cornea. It is especially prevalent in equatorial regions like Lagos due to prolonged UV exposure and dry, dusty environments. While initially benign, a pterygium can cause significant discomfort, redness and visual disturbance as it grows across the visual axis.
We perform pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting — the gold standard technique — which uses a small graft of the patient's own conjunctival tissue to cover the excision site. This approach significantly reduces the risk of recurrence compared to bare sclera excision.
What to expect
- Excision under local anaesthesia
- Conjunctival autograft to reduce recurrence
- Tissue adhesive or suturing as appropriate
- Day case — home within hours
- Post-operative drops & eye shield provided
- UV protection advice to prevent recurrence
Chalazion Removal
Incision and curettage for persistent eyelid lumps that haven't resolved with conservative treatment
A chalazion is a small, painless lump that forms when an oil gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. While many resolve on their own with warm compresses, some persist or grow large enough to affect vision or comfort, requiring minor surgical removal.
At The Eye Doctors, we perform incision and curettage under local anaesthesia; a quick, minor procedure to drain and remove the blocked gland contents. Most patients return to normal activities the same day, with minimal downtime.
What to expect
- Local anaesthesia to the eyelid
- Small incision and curettage of the chalazion
- No stitches required in most cases
- Day case — home within the hour
- Post-operative antibiotic ointment
- Warm compress guidance to prevent recurrence
